Join YCLM for a tour of Bergen Gardens, a new facility by Edison Properties opening its doors in late 2022. The facility will support those with cognitive challenges and their families, while offering the exceptional standards of living and service that tenants of Edison Properties have come to expect for almost sixty years. YCLM had the chance to tour this project in September, and we’re glad to be able to see it at this later stage.
After the tour we’ll be heading to Boston Pizza on Regent Avenue for drinks, appetizers and networking.
Date: Thursday, June 9
Time: 4:00 p.m.
Location: Bergen Gardens - 1475 Molson Street
Cost: $25 (includes appetizers at networking event)
PPE/COVID Compliance: Hardhat, safety boots, glasses, high vis vests and gloves are required.
With the goal of introducing an innovative solution to Manitoba's senior housing and care market, Edison Properties’ Vice President Frank-Koch Schulte was the visionary to champion the inclusion of cross-laminated timber (CLT) into the project’s design; leaning heavily on MMP Principal Architect, Robert Wrublowsky's expertise in the delivery of quality of life design in a memory care environment. Nordic Structures (Montreal, Quebec) was chosen from a small pool of CLT proponents. Working together with project partners Cornerstone Timberframes and Bird Construction to determine project parameters, the design continuously evolved to cohesively meld varied materials into the project's architecture. The initial investment of incorporating CLT as an integral design element will be outweighed by the long-term sustainability, reduced environmental impact and improved end-user experience; providing a warm and inviting home environment for residents and guests. The product's strength is also notably comparable to the reliability of concrete construction.
Integrating “comforts of home” amenities into the project design remains priority even as progress continues onsite. Residents in Memory Care suites will reside in “cottage style” apartments affording them a personal home-like setting with semi-private common area spaces. A commercial kitchen preparing gourmet meals for residents will function in “restaurant style”, a marked departure from the cafeteria style dining commonly seen in care facilities. A beauty salon, theater, convenience shop, libraries and fitness facilities are among a few of the amenities available to residents.
Edison continues to work with various leaders in memory and seniors care research and technology to find applications that will enhance the quality of life for residents of Bergen Gardens.
Thanks to Bird Construction for their co-operation and making this tour possible!
And thanks as always to all our wonderful sponsors for making our efforts this year possible:
